Deep Dive Into Fractions
This video is the foundation of a fraction series that will address the four misconceptions students have with fractions. We will be expanding on 'A Focus on Fractions: Bringing Research to the Classroom' by Marjorie Petit, Robert Laird, Edwin Marsden, and Caroline Ebby.
Throughout the series we will be using three types of visual models of fractions; set, length, and area. Using visual models in mathematics helps students develop conceptual understanding and fluency. In using multiple visual models students will develop another way to show thinking and extend overtime to procedural fluency. Effective teaching practices provide experiences that help students to connect procedures with the underlying concepts and provide students with opportunities to rehearse or practice strategies and to justify their procedures (NCTM, 2014).
